Achieving your childhood dreams

Monday, March 14, 2011

Last Friday, I had a team building session with my whole department of 20 people.
It was then my Director shared with us on 'Really Achieving your Childhood dreams' and it made me rewind back to almost 26 years of dreams.

I was told by my mom that I started asking her as young as 3 years old if a bus driver earns a lot of money.
If a cashier earns a lot of money. If so-and-so earns a lot.
So at that age, I was not really concerned about what needs to be done. I was more concerned if I could have a comfortable living.

Just a brief summary, Professor Randy Pausch was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and gave 'The Last Lecture' on the idea that if someone could only have one last chance to share their knowledge with the world, what would they say and want their legacy to be.

You can purchase his book in all major bookstores.

We were shared this link by our Director.

This video is about 75 mins. Do watch it when you can spare the night before heading to bed.

In summary, taken from Wikipedia:
" Pausch then proceeded to the first part of his speech, explaining his childhood dreams and how he accomplished (or tried to accomplish) them. Pausch first explained his childhood, as well as his family life in the 1960s. Pausch stated that he had a "really good childhood", and, when going back through his family archive of photographs, had never found a picture of him not smiling.[35] Some of these pictures were shown on the projection as slides, including one of him dreaming. He explained how he was inspired by the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969.[36] Pausch then transitioned to a slide which contained a list of his childhood dreams, and explained them. His dreams were being in zero gravity, playing in the National Football League, being the author of a World Book Encyclopedia article, meeting and being Captain Kirk, being "one of the guys who won the big stuffed animals in the amusement park", and becoming a Disney Imagineer.[37]

First off, Pausch explained his dream of being in zero gravity. As a child, this had been a dream inspired by Apollo 11, and had stayed with him as an adult. When he was the computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, he learned of a program that NASA has that allows college students to go up into the air in NASA's Vomit Comet, which uses parabolic arcs to simulate the feeling of weightlessness. Faculty members were not allowed to go (Pausch called this a "brick wall" he faced), so he had to present himself as a web journalist, because local media was allowed on.[38] Pausch proceeded to begin talking about his second childhood dream, playing in the National Football League.[39] Although Pausch was never a player in the National Football League, he spoke about his childhood experiences with Pop Warner Football and how they had affected his life and taught him lessons.[40] Pausch then moved on to his dream of publishing an article in the World Book Encyclopedia. As a child, Pausch always kept and read a World Book Encyclopedia in his home. As he progressed into a career, he became one of the leading professors in the field of virtual reality. World Book then called Pausch, interested in him writing for the encyclopedia. Currently, the article "virtual reality" in the World Book Encyclopedia is the one authored by Pausch.[41]

Next, Pausch explained his dream of being like Captain Kirk from the Star Trek series, with the slide showing "Being like Meeting Captain Kirk".[42] Pausch explained that he realized that there were some things he just could not do, and that was one of them. He eventually changed the goal into meeting William Shatner, the actor who played Captain Kirk.[43] Shatner had written a book on the science of Star Trek, and had gone to Pausch for help with the virtual reality section of the book. Pausch met and worked with Shatner for this purpose.[44] Pausch concluded the section with the story of his becoming an Imagineer at Disney,[45] as well as his achieving the goal of "being one of those guys who wins stuffed animals", which was at a carnival with his wife and children.[46]"

I shared my childhood dreams with my team briefly.
But in detail, I grew up wanting to be a teacher. This was probably when I was 5 years old. I would play teacher-teacher with my elder brother and hit him.
However seeing how sloppish teachers were back then with huge spectacles, I thought that was a turn off.

So I went on with something which I thought was pretty.
That was no other than to be an airstewardess. That was my childhood dreams 20 years ago and 20 kilos (maybe more) lighter. I wanted to travel. I love to travel and taking aeroplanes back then was really something!
But my parents were against it because of serving liquor and tried very much to discourage the idea.
I was adamant but in my late teens, I realised it was not something I wanted my life career to be.
I did not want to fly till past 35 years old and I could not think of my own retirement plan after that.

I wanted to get into fashion school.
Again my parents discourage me from it. Fashion was not the hype back then. I love to know how to design clothes.
I felt that the runway was going to be my life. I could be a designer, put on weight and people will still clap when they see my designs.

My parents wanted to put me into medical school in Melbourne but I was too afraid of blood.
Today, I will always cry when taking injections.
*roll eyes*
Pardon me for that.

I was looking for the right career fit and being fickle that time.

Time was running short.
I received my 'A' levels results and that was when I had to make my life-changing decision.
"What do I want to be?"

I took the most convenient way out and graduated in Info Systems & Management. But that was really an eye opener.
I knew exactly what I really wanted.
I wanted to be a Project Manager and 7 years later, I am a certified Project Manager.
It was something I really wanted to have. More than taking up my MBA. Much more.
Then it made me realised that it did not have to be a big dream to feel satisfied.

Anyway, 2 years ago, I want to pick up fashion school. I want to learn though I may suck at sewing.
Till today, while I am dearly immersed in Her Closet, I am still contemplating.
I will rather do work-arounds and share ideas than work on the nitty gritty. I want to be given a chance to explore.
So I am very happy with Her Closet and where it is today. We have not stagnated yet.
In fact, we have a lot of things coming up which we will launch according to our timeline.
